Put A Lid On It is the newest show at Hummelstown Area Historical Society at 32 W. Main Street.
Years ago, paper clips, pieces of scrap materials, thread, recipes, seed, nails, and pens were saved with the intention that they would be used on another day. The containers used to store these items were often recycled.
The Society celebrates this activity of past households with a new display. Some containers were made to store specific items such as a tool box, hat box, or a sewing basket. But Americans love to improvise and make do with what they have.
It is fun to see how boxes, baskets, cans and glass jars were made to hold one thing and then repurposed as a storage site for something entirely different.
Plan to attend the show and return home and see what you are using to store memorable items or items too good to throw out! The show is open June through September during normal business hours of Monday from 11 AM to 4 PM and Wednesday from 3 PM to 7 PM. Bring you friends because there is no charge for admission. A donation is always welcome.
