Michael Oster, Director of Client Services with Paul Davis of Central Pennsylvania, has been named Executive Chairman for Light The Night fundraising campaign benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) in Lancaster and York, PA.
According to Oster, Light The Night is a series of nationwide fundraising campaigns benefiting LLS research to find blood cancer cures and ensure access to treatments for all blood cancer patients. “I am honored to continue my personal and professional work with LLS. We bring communities together to celebrate those who are fighting the disease and to honor people we’ve lost,” said Oster. “Each year friends, families and coworkers form teams to raise money in support of our mission. However, Fall 2020 will look quite different as we prioritize the safety of our patients, volunteers, and supporters during the pandemic. With these priorities in mind, we are excited to host our 2020 Light The Night as a virtual event,” he said.
Oster is reaching out to the community especially in the face of COVID 19 and economic volatility in the region. His passion for the LLS mission has never been stronger along with the need for all to help patients who are fighting for their lives every day. “Blood cancer patients are at higher risk of getting extremely sick from the coronavirus COVID-19. LLS has amplified the organization’s efforts to share information and provide support to blood cancer patients during this time,” said Oster.
From April 1 until June 30, a COVID-19 patient financial aid program was available with LLS funding which helped more than 19,000 patients by providing $4.8 million in assistance, including $42,000 for individuals and families in Central Pennsylvania. This was in addition to existing financial support programs already offered to families through LLS. Deadline for donations to this year’s campaign is Thursday, October 22 at 7 pm by visiting the website at https://www.lightthenight.org/events/lancaster-york.
Oster added, there are many reasons to be proud to support LLS’s efforts. “I hesitated to ask for finding help at first with many people and businesses struggling to survive. Then, I started to think of a way everyone can help that is both affordable and impactful,” he said.
In 2016, Oster was Lancaster’s Man of the Year Candidate and with that campaign, as in years past, there is a boy and girl involved who are battling blood cancer. “That year, the boy was William. He was an awesome young man with a great attitude. I learned shortly after meeting him that his cancer returned, and he was starting treatment once again,” said Oster. “After quite a struggle and a courageous fight, we lost William a few days before his 13th birthday. William would be 16 years old in 2020 and I cannot help but dwell on what an incredible person he would be if cancer didn’t rob him of his youth.”
With his going dedication to LLS, Oster continues William’s memory and a tribute to his own wife, Candi, who recently underwent a bone marrow transplant after her blood cancer diagnosis. Oster is asking for donations of $16 or any increment of $16 in their names. He is grateful to the non-profit due to a breakthrough medication the organization funded and a successful transplant for Candi as she is alive today. “William won’t be here for his 16th birthday, but thankfully Candi is in remission and recently had the opportunity to hold her new granddaughter,” said Oster.
