How did a holiday tradition of shooting birds more than 100 years ago change to one of counting them?
The documentary Counting on Birds tells how a sense of conservation grew to become the annual Christmas Bird Count. The free film will be shown at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14, in the auditorium of Chambersburg Area Middle School South, 1151 E. McKinley St., Chambersburg. Outdoor adventurer Will Lange travels to Keene and Errol, New Hampshire; Ecuador and Cuba to meet people dedicated to the National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count. The count began on Christmas Day 1900, after an ornithologist proposed a new holiday tradition — a "Christmas Bird Census."
Counting on Birds is presented by Conococheague Audubon. Donations are appreciated. Music starts at 7 p.m. All are welcome.
